Definition of Terms

a non-comprehensive guide

  • comet: a person who passes through your life in periodic intervals of deep connection; a long-distance partner whose importance does not depend on day-to-day enmeshment

  • compersion: feelings of sympathetic joy for another's happiness

  • kitchen table: a style of polyamory where the various members of the polycule can all hang out in a friendly atmosphere

  • metamour: your partner's partner

  • open relationship: a relationship where the parties are free to take new partners

  • polycule: the network of people connected to one another through various polyamorous relationships

  • queerplatonic: a relationship that does not subscribe to traditional boundaries of platonic or romantic; a 'secret third thing' relationship style

  • relationship anarchy: a philosophy that rejects any presumed 'rules' of what a relationship must look like

  • solo polyamory: a style of polyamory where a person has multiple intimate relationships but maintains an independent lifestyle

  • triad: a style of polyamory where three people are all in (a) relationship(s) with each other; a classic OT3

  • vee: a style of polyamory where one person is in relationships with two people who are not involved with each other
